Lessons From History Create a Warning For Today  by Peter Appleton

My life and experiences inspire my work. I use my observations of the world around me coupled with my feelings and then express those within my paintings and prints. My desire is to convey a strong sense of emotion, and my work is expressive in nature. As an artist I work with acrylic, collage, and print.

I have created art all my life, but it is only when I retired from my original career in 2008 that I had the chance to pursue my lifelong passion. I studied at Wirral Meropolitan College in Birkenhead, before moving into my degree with the Open College of the Arts and The University for the Creative Arts. Previously a member of the 104 Duke Street Studios in Liverpool, and The Arena Studios and Gallery in Parliament Street Liverpool. My work is contained in a number of private collections in the UK.  Until July 2022 I acted as curator for the Arena Grounded Gallery in Liverpool. Founder of the Castle Park Print Club in 2023 and still a member today. My studio is based at Castle Park Arts Centre Frodsham.

Lessons From History Create a Warning For Today

Hermann Max Pechstein

Pechstein (31 December 1881 – 29 June 1955) was a German expressionist painter and printmaker and a member of the Die Brucke group.

He produced a series of woodcuts based on the Lords Prayer, promising forgiveness and deliverance from evil, and it resonated powerfully in postwar WW1 Germany, which was saddled with war guilt, food shortages, and economic privations.

In a homage to Pechstein I have taken this concept but designed a Prayer of the False Prophet and re- introduced the political element that he turned his back on. I see this as a warning to the world and the future we seem to be heading toward.

Plato

My 5 posters reflect Plato’s linear view of governance – moving from aristocracy to timocracy through oligarchy onto democracy and eventually ending with tyranny. The ideas of 2500 years ago still, in my view, hold good and it is up to you the viewer to decide where you think we might, as a society, be along this line of governance. In my view our direction of travel seems to reflect a tendency towards the right of the display and tyranny.
