Peter Appleton - Arran Rocks

Arran Rocks

An exhibition of prints by Peter Appleton

‘Scotland in Miniature’ is how people describe Arran. A small Island in the Firth Of Clyde rich in wildlife and geology. The Island is split across the middle by the Highland Boundary Fault with the north end covered with high mountains like the Western Highlands, and the southern end covered in rolling hills like Southern Scotland.

Having recently spent time on the island I was drawn to the wildness of the place but more specifically to the geometry and geology of the rock formations. Having travelled the island collecting rocks and sketching formations I was moved to develop an artistic response to what I had seen and experienced.

I turned to printmaking to reflect some of the interesting formations I had witnessed. I decided to approach this work in a particular way using unprimed canvas and a variety of printing techniques, the aim was to produce some free hanging canvases that would capture some of the texture of the rocks but also by their unfinished appearance some of the rustic wild quality of the island. Not refined and polished, but primitive and wild to give a true sense of place.
