Ali Kippax

About

Ali graduated with a BA (Hons) degree in Fine Art from Bristol UK, where she studied under the guidance and mentorship of the highly acclaimed artist Paul Feiler.

She combined a career in Art education alongside her own personal creative development for many years, before concentrating solely on her own working practice.

Ali grew up on The Wirral where she was surrounded by coastal references, at the same time enjoying easy access to the mountainous areas of North Wales. Regular trips to Cornwall have punctuated her life as a painter. The inspiration for her work is deeply entrenched in these visual experiences which continue to inform the energetic mark making, gestural paint application and textures that reflect the enthusiastic and emotional response present in her paintings.

“My work is an emotional response to the landscape and not a literal interpretation of what I see. I am primarily concerned with the elemental relationship between land, sea and sky, rather than a particular sense of place.

Preliminary studies generate an understanding of the shapes, colours, textures and atmosphere of my surroundings and help to inform the early stages of the final painting, although I am increasingly working directly onto canvas on location, as I feel that this sustains a freshness and originality to my work.

The freedom and spontaneity of mark making and gestural paint application allow me to express a more personal image of the environment.”
