My work is a response to the places I visit, where I have emotional connection and I feel a need to capture what I see. I use the landscape to trigger ideas, forms and structures. Through painting I strive to represent the feeling of being there; the movement, the elements, textures and colours. I look for the drama in this landscape, it’s linear qualities and the effects created by changing seasons, light and weather.
This current series of work is exploring capturing the ‘Essence’ of a place I visit most days with my dog. It is a hidden gem, quiet and atmospheric. It constantly changes with the seasons, and I am fascinated by both the subtle and dramatic changes of the structures, colours and textures through the seasons.
I try to approach each new painting with an open mind and without a pre- conceived idea. Each new painting is like learning to paint all over again. I relish the challenge, whether it is the complexity of foliage, colour palette or trying to keep the balance between expression, emotion and realism
