About

Textile Artist

I studied Textile Design in Loughborough and then trained to teach in Liverpool. I have taught Art and Design in schools and colleges, changing direction ten years ago and devoting time to develop my own art practice.

The work exhibited here in ‘Essence refers to the natural world and the rural landscape, all witnessed whilst walking in areas of England, Wales and Scotland during the past year. I have found endless inspiration in the beauty of nature and the amazing grandeur of the varied landscape of the British Isles.

As I walked through the country-side I took photographs and sketched. I recorded the textures, surfaces, colours and qualities of light as things changed throughout the year. The sketches record details and enabled me to become truly absorbed in the beauty of the scenery.

The sketchbook drawings and the photographs informed the work that I produced in my studio space. The development pieces and final outcomes focus on the structure of the land, coastal scenes and journeys through various landscapes.

I adopted methods that abstract elements from the landscape observed, to achieve effects that portray the mood of a place.  They are depictions of a visual reality exploring simplicity, order and pattern rather than being representational.

As a weaver I am very drawn to the exploration of structure, pattern, colour and texture. I have been using redundant climbing ropes to weave with.
