Exhibition by Peter Appleton

Over the past few years Britain has faced a number of significant issues – Brexit, a pandemic, lockdown, upheaval in politics, war in Europe – all representing pivotal episodes. We all experienced these episodes, but people are different and therefore react in different ways.

As an artist I felt compelled to respond; wanting to reflect something of these episodes at a human level by using faces – faces display our inner feelings and emotions.

My approach was to observe people (strangers, friends, family) and to capture ideas and images in my sketchbooks before translating them into paintings, linocuts and collage/prints.

I don’t pass judgement, merely attempt to catch a moment that reflects something of the things I observed.

What did I see?

I saw anger, the importance of symbols, duplicity, communications, consumption, despair, but ultimately I saw hope.

No solutions are offered, just the opportunity through viewing the images of seeing a bit of ourselves and maybe pausing  for some thoughts before we move into a future to face more episodes.

Meet the Artists Open Evening is on Friday 13 January 2023  7 - 9 pm.  Everyone welcome
