Sue Hancell - Moods

All at once serene, transient, and quietly violent. Like coded poems of love and war, transcribed in the language of bracken.

For the correct viewer Susan's pieces project a tranquil uncertainty, seemingly borrowed from the swirling chaos which exists at the core of woodland, highland, valley, and coast.

The rocks, the leaves yes; but the blood within them too is often written into Susan's work. Her images can move fluidly between emotive visions and carefully impressioned sky, until the landscape of mind and earth become in conversation.

Existing in clear defiance of didactic principles, instead presenting spaces for transcendent reflection or escape.

Susan's canvas' bloom with danced remembrances of light, pain, or the blisteringly unrepentant power of life just going on.

Her creative practices are both compulsion and discourse. A dedicated lifelong practice and an ever emergent way of self-learning.

Painting, drawing, mark making all meditate at the complex intersections between a body and its place in the world. Between memory and emotion. Between chaos and communication.
